Identities

Weekly Questions:

  1. Do we form and shape our own identities?
  2. In a culture where we are bombarded with ideas and images of "what we should be," how does one form an identity that remains true and authentic for her/himself?
  3. What turning points determine our individual pathways to adulthood?
  4. In a culture where we are bombarded with our people trying to define us, how do we make decisions for ourselves?

Identities?

Yes, we form and shape our identities through various experiences, beliefs, values, and choices throughout our lives. Our identities constantly evolve as we navigate through different stages of life and interact with different people and cultures. Through self-reflection and introspection, we can understand who we are, what we stand for, and what makes us unique. Ultimately, we can shape our identities by embracing our authentic selves and making conscious decisions that align with our values and aspirations.

One must prioritise self-reflection and introspection to form a genuine and authentic identity. Understanding one's values, passions, and beliefs makes it easier to filter out external influences and focus on personal growth. Surrounding oneself with supportive and like-minded individuals can also help stay true to oneself. Authenticity is about staying aligned with one's unique sense of self amidst societal pressures and expectations.

Some turning points that determine our individual pathways to adulthood include completing formal education, starting a new career, establishing personal relationships, and taking on responsibilities such as living independently or starting a family. These milestones shape our growth and development as we transition from adolescence to adulthood.

To make decisions for ourselves amidst the constant pressure to conform, it is essential to prioritize self-reflection, listen to our inner voice, and trust our instincts. Understanding our values, goals, and desires allows us to assert our individuality and make decisions that align with our true selves. Additionally, seeking support from like-minded individuals or mentors can provide guidance and encouragement in navigating decision-making challenges.

  1. So to be ourselves we need to focus on and listen to ourselves. Easier said than done at times, but it has been my experience as well.
